News

Ahh yes, the May flowers from April showers. However, I don't remember many showers here in Los Angeles, and everything still managed to bloom. Organically. On time. The power of the natural rythyms of nature.

And speaking of the natural rythym of nature....how about those mothers of ours?! Whether you have one mom, two moms, a grandma who raised you or any other nuturing figure in your life, we celebrate that person right here and now. We give thanks for her presence in our lives, and honor her wisdom, beauty and compassion. We appreciate you!

And so with this Mother's Day approaching, there was no one I could choose to interview but my very own momma. Thanks Mom. You are definitely one hot hottie!

With love,

Each month we feature a different HIH member...so we can all get to know each other just a bit better. This month we have chosen Angie from Redmond, WA.

SAHARA (S): What advice can you give new mothers?
ANGIE (A): 4 things: (1) Savor the moments with your children. Everyone is right when they say childhood passes too quickly. (2) Have fun with your kids..it's OK to let the housework, etc. go to be outside and catch bugs! (3) Don't try to be perfect. No one is. (4) Remember that motherhood is one career that you don't retire from, so you are always a mom. With that in mind, it becomes the most important job you'll ever have.

(S): What inspires you?
(A): My family, my faith, my friends and random acts of kindness.

(S): What changes have you seen culturally since you were a young mom yourself?
(A): I was a young mom at the beginning of Women's Lib. Mothers were starting to go into the workplace, not just from necessity but from desire. We were unsure how to balance work and motherhood. That is still an issue today, but now working moms are the rule rather than the exception. There is more support available, but it is still difficult to manage it all.

(S): Are you bringing sexy back?
(A): Absolutely! To me, sexy is being happy with who you are and where you are in life. That brings confidence, energy and a sense of well being. Many people my age (60's) are sexy for that very reason. Baby boomers rock!!

(S): What is the most satisfying part of being a mother?
(A): Watching your children grow and blossom into independent, happy, well adjusted adults. That's the greatest gift a mother can have. Now that I am a grandmother, I get to enjoy it all over again! This is the best time of life. Our family has expanded beyond Sahara and Mark to include Chandra, Ali and Anne. We are living every parent's dream of family vacations, get togethers and sharing. That is so important to my husband and I, and we feel blessed.

PS, May I also express one comment of motherly pride? I am so proud of my daughter for turning her dream of HEART IS HOT into a reality!

(S): Ah, Mom! Thanks! Couldn't have done it without you..

what's happening

What's happening is Mother's Day! What better way to honor your mother or a mother you know than with an HIH heart. And all that love she has given to you can be passed forward to another by her. WOW! We would love to be the recipient of those hearts!

And poof! Heart #1 pops up again

Yes, indeed. Heart #1 has made an appearance in the Los Angeles area and was recently taken to Australia for comfort during a difficult time.

Healing on the Moxie level

We are happy to report that Sally Wagner, our trooper from last month who was suddenly diagnosed with a rare infection, is doing quite well now. You can still get your HIH hearts through Moxie Lady to support her healing efforts. Perhaps a "Sally Wagner" heart for your mom?

Women's Night

HIH is proud to support Women's Night in Los Angeles by donating hearts to the silent auction as well as the VIP gift bags.

The evening celebrates the achievements of women making a difference in the gay and lesbian community. This year, Sharon Stone and music genius Linda Perry will receive both the special Board of Directors award as well as the Creative Integrity Award. The marvelous Jane Lynch will host the event.

Words to live by!

"When you come to a fork in the road....take it!"

We aren't completely sure who said this, but we do know that Sahara quotes it often, and for good reason!
